Area 51 / S4

Classified USAF facility — Groom Lake, Nevada
ACTIVE — HIGHLY CLASSIFIED

Area 51 (officially Homey Airport / KXTA) is a classified USAF facility at Groom Lake, Nevada, used for development and testing of experimental aircraft. Its UAP significance is twofold: it was managed by EG&G — the contractor named by multiple sources as having direct interactions with recovered non-human materials — and its sub-site S4, 15 miles south at Papoose Lake, is where Bob Lazar claims nine alien craft were stored for reverse engineering.

History & Classification

Area 51 has been a classified flight test facility since the U-2 programme in the 1950s. The CIA and USAF jointly operated it. EG&G won the operations contract and managed the facility’s workforce, security, and classified programmes. The facility was officially acknowledged by the CIA in 2013. Its deep history includes the U-2, SR-71, and F-117 stealth aircraft — all developed and tested there in classified conditions before public disclosure.

UAP Programme Connection

Alfred O’Donnell, a senior EG&G manager, told George Knapp that the government possessed ‘a flying saucer recovered from New Mexico’ and ‘a live being’ that they ‘couldn’t communicate with.’ EG&G’s Area 51 role directly connects the facility to UAP materials. Bob Lazar’s account places nine craft of different designs at S4, 15 miles south. Congressional staffer Richard D’Amato visited Area 51 in the early 1990s to investigate crash retrieval claims and concluded it was ‘entirely feasible that this UFO cover-up exists within a private company’ such as EG&G or Lockheed.

Current Status

Area 51 continues operating as a classified flight test facility. Its current UAP-relevant status is unknown. The transition of UAP programmes to contractor custody — documented by AARO’s historical review — means that even if government-held materials were once at Area 51, they may now be at private facilities. Lockheed’s Skunk Works has a documented presence at related facilities. EG&G was acquired and absorbed into larger defence corporations.
