Historical Significance
On the night of March 13, 1997, thousands of witnesses across Arizona and Nevada reported two distinct phenomena: first, a formation of lights in a V-shape passing silently over the state at low altitude, and second, a series of stationary amber orbs over Phoenix. The state’s governor at the time, Fife Symington, later confirmed he personally witnessed the triangular craft and called it ‘otherworldly.’ The military attributed the stationary lights to A-10 flares — but witnesses insist the two events were separate.

The official position: both events were explained as A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft flying in formation (the V-formation) and illumination flares dropped over the Barry Goldwater Range (the stationary orbs). Governor Symington publicly mocked witnesses at a press conference days later — then admitted 14 years afterward that he had personally seen the craft and staged the press conference under pressure.
Documentary Record
Governor Symington’s reversal is the key detail. His 2007 statement — ‘I suspect that unless the Department of Defense [has] a very good explanation for what occurred, it was probably some form of alien spacecraft’ — came after leaving office and no longer having political exposure. The V-formation craft was described by hundreds of independent witnesses as a single massive silent structure, not a formation of planes. National Guard aircraft flying that night were confirmed to be at a different altitude and heading.
