Background

George T. Knapp is an American investigative journalist, news anchor, and talk radio host based in Las Vegas. Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, raised in northern California, BA from the University of West Georgia, MA from the University of the Pacific. Taught debate and forensics at the University of the Pacific and UC Berkeley before moving to Las Vegas in 1979. Joined KLAS-TV (Channel 8) as a reporter and news anchor in 1981 and has been there ever since.

The Awards Wall

Five regional and two national Edward R. Murrow Awards. Twenty-four Pacific Southwest Regional Emmy Awards. Nine Associated Press Mark Twain Awards. A DuPont Award from Columbia University. Two Peabody Awards. The 2008 Peabody was for the investigative series Crossfire: Water, Power, and Politics. Knapp’s «regular» reporting beat is organised crime and government corruption. He is one of the most decorated television journalists in the American West.

Bob Lazar — the Story That Changed Everything

In November 1989 Knapp aired the interviews that catapulted Area 51 into global public consciousness. Bob Lazar, identified initially as «Dennis» in May 1989 and later by name, claimed to have worked on reverse-engineered alien craft at the secretive S4 facility south of Area 51. The interviews were introduced to Knapp by aviator John Lear and aired on KLAS-TV in May and November 1989.

In 1990 Knapp’s reporting on UFOs earned him the United Press International «Individual Achievement by a Journalist» award. Whatever final verdict eventually lands on Lazar, the cultural impact is permanent: every modern conversation about Area 51 starts with Knapp’s 1989 broadcasts.

Skinwalker Ranch

Through Knapp’s collaboration with NIDS deputy administrator Colm Kelleher, the so-called Skinwalker Ranch in northeastern Utah entered the public record. Knapp’s 2002 Las Vegas Mercury piece «Path of the Skinwalker» and the co-authored 2005 book Hunt for the Skinwalker: Science Confronts the Unexplained at a Remote Ranch in Utah (with Kelleher) are the foundational texts. The ranch was acquired by Robert Bigelow’s NIDS for scientific investigation; the property is now famous worldwide.

The Reid–Bigelow Connection

Knapp introduced Nevada Senator Harry Reid to Robert Bigelow because of their shared interest in unidentified aerial phenomena. That introduction matters. The Reid–Bigelow relationship is what produced the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Application Program (AAWSAP), which produced AATIP, which produced the leak that produced the New York Times 2017 story, which produced the modern disclosure era. Knapp is the connective tissue between mid-century Las Vegas UFO research and 21st-century federal disclosure infrastructure.

Weaponized & Ongoing Work

Knapp co-hosts the Weaponized podcast alongside fellow UFO investigator Jeremy Corbell — one of the highest-leverage podcasts in the modern UAP space, regularly featuring DoD insiders and former UAPTF operatives. He is a frequent host of the syndicated paranormal radio show Coast to Coast AM. He hosted the Netflix docuseries Investigation Alien in November 2024.

In July 2023, Knapp attended the Congressional UFO hearings in Washington. Rolling Stone described him as «the John the Baptist of the UFO movement.» That description is correct. Every modern UAP story has Knapp upstream of it.

Why He Matters

Knapp legitimised UAP journalism in mainstream television four decades before NewsNation existed. He kept the Bob Lazar story alive when nobody else would touch it. He brought Skinwalker Ranch into public knowledge. He connected Reid to Bigelow, which produced AAWSAP and AATIP. Without Knapp, the modern disclosure era never gets built. He is the journalist who made every other journalist on this list possible.
