From 1983 to approximately 1987, thousands of residents across the Hudson Valley in New York State reported encounters with massive, slow-moving, boomerang or V-shaped objects with multiple coloured lights. Witnesses included police officers, pilots, military personnel, and IBM scientists. The objects were typically low, silent, and enormous — some described as wider than a football field. The sustained multi-year nature of the wave makes it the longest-duration mass UAP event in modern American history.

The official position was that the objects were ultralight aircraft flying in formation — a flying club conducting night exercises. Witnesses near the flight paths of the alleged ultralights found this explanation inadequate for objects described as completely silent, solid-appearing, and enormous. Multiple witnesses described objects that blocked out stars, indicating solid structure.

The ultralight explanation requires a coordinated group of ultralight aircraft flying in perfect formation, silently, at extremely low altitude, over a four-year period, while being observed by thousands including instrument-rated pilots and scientists at IBM’s facilities in the area. IBM physicist J. Allen Hynek’s successor organisation CUFOS investigated and found the explanation inadequate.
