Chile’s UAP programme began in 1968. Brazil’s Operation Saucer ran in 1977. Uruguay’s CRIDOVNI was founded in 1979. All three had formal, funded, staffed UAP investigation systems while the US was officially debunking the phenomenon. Latin America built the world’s most advanced non-US UAP infrastructure — largely unnoticed internationally.

Latin America has a stronger official UAP transparency infrastructure than almost anywhere else on Earth. Chile’s SEFAA has run since 1968. Brazil deployed a classified military investigation team to the Amazon in 1977. Uruguay’s Air Force created CRIDOVNI in 1979. All three are currently active. Together they represent a 58-year continuous civilian and military UAP engagement that dwarfs most of the Global North.
Uruguay’s Fuerza Aérea (Air Force) established CRIDOVNI — the Comisión Receptora e Investigadora de Denuncias de Objetos Volantes No Identificados — in 1979. It is one of the oldest continuously operating official military UAP investigation bodies in the world. Reports are submitted to the Air Force, investigated, and where unexplained, published. Uruguay’s FAU website is currently under update.
In 1977–1978 the Brazilian Air Force secretly deployed a military investigation team to Colarés island in the Amazon. Residents were reporting being struck by beams of light from aerial objects, suffering burns and radiation-like injuries. The investigation produced thousands of documents, hundreds of photographs, and hours of film. It was immediately classified. Some files are now public.
CRIDOVNI was established in 1979 under Uruguay’s Air Force. The Comision Receptora e Investigadora de Denuncias de Objetos Voladores No Identificados has operated continuously for 45 years, making it one of the oldest active military UAP investigation bodies in the world. AARO was established 43 years later.
Brazil’s Arquivo Nacional holds UAP documents released under the Lei de Acesso a Informacao. The SIAN database at sian.an.gov.br provides access. The collection includes Operation Saucer files, SIOANI records, and Brazilian Air Force UAP investigations from the 1950s onward.
Chile’s official UAP investigation history begins July 9, 1968, when Coronel Sergio Bravo sent a circular to 43 aeronautical installations. That first circular is the foundation of SEFAA, with over 2,200 numbered cases. Chile sent 1960s reports to the Condon Commission.
Brazil’s Arquivo Nacional holds digitised military UAP files from decades of Air Force investigations, including Operation Saucer — the 1977–1978 classified Brazilian Air Force investigation into UAP encounters in the Amazon. Files are searchable through SIAN. Brazil has conducted multiple national declassification rounds since the 1990s.

April 2026 batch published May 7, 2026: 10 separate case files. Case numbers are now in the 2200s. The programme operates across 32 million square kilometres of airspace from Arica to the South Pole.

In February 2026, the Archives for the Unexplained published an interview article titled ‘The Man Sitting on More UFO Evidence Than Anyone Alive.’ The subject claims to possess one of the most extensive private UFO evidence collections in the world — decades of documentation. AFU published it. A Swedish university now uses AFU for UAP research. The archive is accelerating.
Italy’s Air Force has published annual OVNI sighting reports every year from 2009 through 2025. That is 17 consecutive years of official, publicly available Italian military UAP assessment data. AARO — the US equivalent — was established in 2022. Italy started this 13 years before AARO existed. All 17 reports are free to download at aeronautica.difesa.it/ovni/.
The Danish Air Force UFO archive covers years of officially investigated UAP reports collected by the Operations Center. The 329-page document set spans four PDFs and includes the original inquiries, investigation notes, and Air Force assessments. Italy has a formal, active, state-mandated process for reporting UAP sightings. Fill in the official form. Submit it to the nearest Carabinieri station. The Carabinieri forward it to the Air Force General Security Department. The Air Force investigates. If no explanation is found, the case is classified as OVNI and published in the annual report.
While the US classified its UAP files for decades, Scandinavia was building archives. The Danish Air Force published 329 pages of UAP records in 2009. Sweden’s AFU has operated since 1973 as the world’s most comprehensive private UAP archive. Norway ran Project Blue Book-equivalent investigations independently. The Nordic transparency model predates PURSUE by decades.
AFU’s collections in Norrköping, Sweden include books, magazines, raw case investigation files, audio and video recordings, clippings, researchers’ personal archives, physical objects, and photographs.
