September 19-20, 1961, US Route 3, Indian Head, New Hampshire, White Mountains: Betty Hill (white social worker, Master’s in social sciences) and Barney Hill (Black postal worker, NAACP board member) — an interracial couple during the civil rights era — were driving home from a Montreal/Niagara Falls vacation. Around 10:30pm, a bright light appeared to follow their car. Barney pulled over with binoculars and saw a craft with figures in windows staring down at him. He fled, drove away. Both heard a beeping sound and felt drowsy. They arrived home 35 miles further than remembered with 2 hours unaccounted for. PHYSICAL EVIDENCE: Betty’s dress was torn with a mysterious pink powder on it. Both watches had stopped. Barney’s shoes were scuffed. HYPNOSIS (December 1963–July 1964): Dr. Benjamin Simon (Boston psychiatrist, hypnotherapy specialist for wartime trauma) conducted separate weekly sessions with each over 7 months. Every session tape-recorded. Under hypnosis: Both independently described being taken aboard a disc-shaped craft by ~5-foot grey-skinned humanoid beings with large eyes and no hair. Medical examination on metal tables. Sample collection: hair, nails, skin. Telepathic or nonverbal communication. Barney: “Oh those eyes. They’re there in my brain!” Betty’s account: shown a 3D star map — solid lines represented “trade routes,” dashed lines represented “expeditions.” A needle was inserted into her navel (described as a “pregnancy test”). STAR MAP / ZETA RETICULI: Betty drew the star map from memory under hypnosis (spring 1964). Amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish built a physical 3D stellar model in the late 1960s and concluded the map matched the view from the Zeta Reticuli binary star system, 39 light-years from Earth. Published in Astronomy magazine December 1974 as “The Zeta Reticuli Incident.” Carl Sagan and Steven Soter disputed the match as pattern-selection bias. CASE SIGNIFICANCE: Established the modern “abduction” archetype including grey alien appearance, missing time, star maps, medical examination, and telepathic communication — elements that appeared in this case before they became culturally widespread. The Betty and Barney Hill Papers at the University of New Hampshire Library is the most-accessed collection in the library system.
