Three critical UK National Archives findings operating in parallel: (1) CHURCHILL MEMO (PREM 11/855): July 28, 1952 — Prime Minister Churchill to the Air Minister: “What does all this stuff about flying saucers amount to? What can it mean? What is the truth? Let me have a report at your convenience.” The response, dated August 9, 1952, was classified “Secret/Discreet.” It was a 6-page report concluding all sightings could be explained as misidentifications, optical illusions, psychological delusions, or hoaxes. The underlying intelligence demand from Britain’s wartime leader has never been satisfactorily answered. (2) WEST FREUGH 1957 (CAB 157/27): April 4, 1957 — Multiple trailer-mounted radar units at RAF West Freugh bombing range, southern Scotland, tracked a large object at 50,000-70,000 feet above the Irish Sea. It was stationary for 10 minutes. It moved vertically. It made an “impossible” sharp turn. It was described as being as large as a ship — larger than any aircraft of the day. Civilian radar operators spoke to media before being silenced under the Official Secrets Act. Front pages of national newspapers resulted. This led to questions in Parliament AND, for the only documented time, UFOs came up on the agenda of the Joint Intelligence Committee. Radar operators were warned under the Official Secrets Act not to say anything further. (3) DESTRUCTION POLICY: National Archives briefing guide confirms MOD files on UFOs were “routinely destroyed after five years” until 1967 — when public interest finally forced preservation. An unknown volume of 1940s-1960s UAP records was systematically eliminated. This parallels the GAO finding that ALL RAAF records from 1945-1949 were destroyed with no documented authority.
