Dr. J. Allen Hynek (1910-1986) — astronomer, Ohio State University, later Northwestern University. Hired by the US Air Force as the scientific consultant for Project Sign, Project Grudge, and Project Blue Book from 1948 until the project’s closure in 1969. His role: apply scientific rigor to debunk UFO reports. TRANSFORMATION: Over 20+ years of reviewing thousands of cases, Hynek encountered a persistent residue of incidents that resisted conventional explanation. His public skepticism eroded. He began to advocate for serious scientific study of the phenomenon — initially seen as career suicide. THE CLOSE ENCOUNTER CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM: Hynek created the systematic classification still universally used today in UAP research: CE1 — Close Encounter First Kind: UFO sighted within 500 feet but no physical effects. CE2 — Close Encounter Second Kind: Physical evidence left (burn marks, radiation, physical effects on witnesses). CE3 — Close Encounter Third Kind: Occupants or beings associated with the UAP (inspired Spielberg’s film title). CE4 — Close Encounter Fourth Kind: Abduction (added later by researchers after the Hill case). CE5 — Voluntary human-ET contact (added by Steven Greer). CUFOS: After Blue Book closed (1969), Hynek founded the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) in 1973 — the first serious scientific organization dedicated to UAP research. CULTURAL IMPACT: Served as the scientific consultant for Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977) and made a cameo appearance in the film. His transformation from debunker to advocate is the model for how serious engagement with the evidence changes expert conclusions — a pattern repeated in every subsequent disclosure revelation.
