August 1956, RAF Bentwaters and RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk — documented by USAF Air Intelligence and the Condon Report. Radars detected a stationary object 20-25 miles southwest of Lakenheath. It then began moving north at 400-600 mph — with zero acceleration, starting instantly at constant speed. It made several abrupt direction changes without slowing. RAF De Havilland Venom scrambled from RAF Waterbeach. Per USAF Air Intelligence Report (Captain Edward L. Holt, August 31, 1956): the pilot obtained radar lock on the object. The object then turned and began chasing the fighter. The pilot attempted evasive manoeuvres — the object followed, demonstrating controlled pursuit behaviour. Condon Report official conclusion: “In summary, this is the most puzzling and unusual case in the radar-visual files. The apparent rational, intelligent behaviour of the UFO suggests a mechanical device of unknown origin as the most probable explanation of this sighting.” The phrase “rational, intelligent behaviour” in a US government scientific report stands as the most extraordinary language in any official UAP document. Additional UK context: a Meteor VII pilot who reported three disc-shaped objects at 35,000 feet in 1952 — confirmed by ATCC Gloucester radar — later asked to see his own file as an Air Commodore and was told: “records routinely destroyed after five years.” The same systematic destruction policy documented at RAAF Roswell. This same base — RAF Lakenheath — was penetrated by unknown objects 68 years later in November 2024.
