September 13, 2023: Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies held its first formal public hearing on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena — part of a global trend following US congressional hearings. The hearing was immediately overshadowed by a spectacle: self-described ufologist Jaime Maussan brought two coffin-like boxes into the congressional chamber and revealed two bodies — approximately 3.3 feet tall, grayish skin, large heads, three fingers on each hand. Maussan testified under oath that these were “non-human beings that are not part of our terrestrial evolution,” found in Peru in 2017, estimated to be 1,000 years old. One allegedly contained eggs. SCIENTIFIC ASSESSMENT: Experts across multiple institutions concluded the remains were almost certainly human mummies deliberately manipulated to appear alien. Analysis from 2017 showed the feet could have been created by mutilating human mummy digits. The National Autonomous University of Mexico’s mass spectrometry lab distanced itself from Maussan’s claims, stating they made “no conclusions about the origin of these samples.” Multiple scientists called for legal action over potential desecration of human remains. RYAN GRAVES RESPONSE: Ryan Graves (Americans for Safe Aerospace) had accepted the invitation hoping to advance UAP pilot testimony momentum. After the hearing he tweeted: “Unfortunately, yesterday’s demonstration was a huge step backwards for this issue.” TIMING: The day after Maussan’s testimony — September 14, 2023 — NASA released its independent UAP report and announced its first ever Director of UAP Research. The Mexican circus and the NASA science report occupied the same news cycle. Maussan returned to Mexico’s Congress in November 2023 for a second presentation.
