CIA Document: “23 Soviet Soldiers Turned to Stone Poles” After Shooting Down UFO — CIA Analyst: “The Aliens Possess Such Weapons That Go Beyond All Our Assumptions. They Can Stand Up for Themselves If Attacked.”

CREDIBILITY RATING: LOW — TABLOID ORIGIN. HOWEVER: CIA was actively tracking and translating the story, and a CIA analyst’s quoted reaction is significant. THE DOCUMENT: Available on CIA FOIA Reading Room (foia.cia.gov). CIA Foreign Broadcast Information Service translation of a March 27, 1993 Ukrainian newspaper article (Holos Ukrayiny), which reprinted a story called “Cosmic Revenge” from Ternopil Vechirniy. Original story traced to 1992 Weekly World News (US tabloid). Document marked UNCLAS — was never classified. CIA analyst quoted: “If the KGB file corresponds to reality, this is an extremely menacing case. The aliens possess such weapons and technology that go beyond all our assumptions. They can stand up for themselves if attacked.” THE CLAIM: 1989-1990 Soviet military unit on training exercise. Saucer-shaped UFO appeared. A soldier fired a surface-to-air missile. UFO crashed. Five short humanoids with large heads and large black eyes emerged. They merged into a single spherical object, emitting buzzing/hissing, growing brilliant white. Explosion. 23 of 25 soldiers instantly turned into “stone poles” — molecular structure identical to limestone. Two survivors were standing in shade. Bodies taken to secret research laboratory outside Moscow per the story. ASSESSMENT: The original story almost certainly originated as tabloid fiction. However, the Interesting Engineering report notes the CIA document was based on a referenced 250-page KGB report — which if authentic would be a different matter. The CIA analyst quote is the most significant element: whether the event was real or fabricated, a CIA analyst committed to print that UAPs appearing to “stand up for themselves” against military attack represents a weapons capability “beyond all our assumptions.” Source: CIA FOIA. Document title: “Paper reports alleged evidence on mishap involving a UFO.”
