Robert Bigelow is the Las Vegas real estate billionaire who effectively funded the US government’s UAP investigation program from 1996 to 2012 — and whose private research organization became the vehicle through which the DIA ran its most significant UAP science program. Understanding Bigelow’s role is essential to understanding the institutional architecture: the $22M AAWSAP appropriation went not to the Pentagon but to Bigelow’s company, specifically because private contractor status provides classification protections that government agencies cannot achieve under FOIA.
NIDS (1995–2004): The National Institute for Discovery Science, founded and funded entirely by Bigelow, was the predecessor organization to BAASS. NIDS employed retired military and intelligence personnel — including retired Army Colonel John Alexander — and conducted serious scientific investigations of UAP, cattle mutilation, and anomalous phenomena. Its lead investigator, Colm Kelleher, built the research methodology and institutional relationships that later enabled AAWSAP. NIDS investigated Skinwalker Ranch, documented the Colm Kelleher-George Knapp cases, and produced research that directly informed Harry Reid’s decision to push for federal funding.
BAASS (2008–2012) — the government’s UAP research arm: Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies was awarded the $22M DIA AAWSAP contract in 2008. BAASS produced 38 research reports for the DIA covering UAP propulsion physics, human physiological effects, anti-gravity, metamaterials, wormholes, and consciousness interface. These reports were delivered to the Pentagon. Some have been partially released under FOIA. BAASS also operated the Skinwalker Ranch research facility during this period, with Kelleher leading the scientific program.
Bigelow’s statements: In a 2017 CBS 60 Minutes interview, when asked if he believed in alien life: “I’m absolutely convinced… I don’t give a damn. I don’t care.” He stated he had spent “millions and millions and millions” of his own money on UAP research. He stated the government had been involved in the subject far longer than the public understood. He has said that extraterrestrial intelligence is real and has been visiting Earth. A man who built the infrastructure for the Pentagon’s classified UAP research program and spent decades funding private research — his conclusions carry weight.
