The National UFO Reporting Center has processed over 180,000 UAP sighting reports since 1974. The National Archives holds declassified UAP photographs across multiple record groups including Project Blue Book (RG 341), USAF Commands (RG 342), and NASA (RG 255). NARA’s photographs page lists seven NASA “Flying Saucer” images, multiple Project Blue Book film stills, and USAF Commands photographs with National Archives catalog identifiers. The Air University research guide and the CRS DEW report together map a complete industrial ecosystem building toward megawatt-scale directed energy weapons. AFIT has a dedicated Centre for Directed Energy. AFRL has an active DE technology directorate. DARPA runs classified programmes. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Honeywell all have active DEW product lines. The Directed Energy Professional Society organises the community. This is a mature, fully funded industrial programme.
The Department of War released 17 official UAP images with PURSUE Release 01 on May 8, 2026: FBI infrared photographs of unidentified objects over the western US in 2025, Apollo 17 three lights above the lunar terrain (1972), and unresolved military UAP reports from Africa, Japan, Greece, UAE, and the Middle East spanning 2013-2026.
The CIA’s FOIA Electronic Reading Room at cia.gov/readingroom/collection/ufos-fact-or-fiction holds nearly 1,000 declassified intelligence documents on UFOs dating from the late 1940s through the 1990s. The collection includes the full Robertson Panel report, internal CIA memos on NICAP, SAC nuclear base UAP incidents, and documents showing CIA involvement in public perception management of the UFO issue.

On June 9, 2022, NASA announced it was commissioning an independent UAP study team. The team’s Statement of Task contained 8 specific questions covering data collection, analysis techniques, airspace reporting, physical constraints, and how NASA can advance scientific understanding. In 1952, H. Marshall Chadwell — the CIA’s Assistant Director of Scientific Intelligence — wrote directly to Director of Central Intelligence Walter Bedell Smith arguing that the flying saucer situation required immediate action. The memo is in the CIA’s FOIA collection. It is one of the most significant documents in the UAP intelligence record: the CIA’s own senior scientist telling its director that the phenomenon was real enough to demand DCI-level attention.
Chile’s UAP programme began in 1968. Brazil’s Operation Saucer ran in 1977. Uruguay’s CRIDOVNI was founded in 1979. All three had formal, funded, staffed UAP investigation systems while the US was officially debunking the phenomenon. Latin America built the world’s most advanced non-US UAP infrastructure — largely unnoticed internationally.
CRIDOVNI was established in 1979 under Uruguay’s Air Force. The Comision Receptora e Investigadora de Denuncias de Objetos Voladores No Identificados has operated continuously for 45 years, making it one of the oldest active military UAP investigation bodies in the world. AARO was established 43 years later.
Italy’s Air Force has published annual OVNI sighting reports every year from 2009 through 2025. That is 17 consecutive years of official, publicly available Italian military UAP assessment data. AARO — the US equivalent — was established in 2022. Italy started this 13 years before AARO existed. All 17 reports are free to download at aeronautica.difesa.it/ovni/.
On February 13, 2026, AARO published a white paper from its 2025 UAP Workshop titled “Narrative Data, Infrastructures, and Analysis.” The paper is publicly available on aaro.mil. It represents the most recent internally-produced analytical document from AARO’s research programme, published six weeks before PURSUE launched.
The US government now runs two parallel UAP transparency systems. AARO at aaro.mil handles ongoing case intake, resolution and trend analysis. PURSUE at war.gov/ufo handles historical declassification of legacy files. They have different mandates, different case inventories, and different resolution approaches. Here is how they compare.
AARO’s UAP Records page confirms KONA BLUE was a real Department of Homeland Security sensitive compartment. Multiple interviewees told AARO it was established to protect the retrieval and exploitation of non-human biologics. AARO investigated. KONA BLUE was a prospective Special Access Program that was never approved or funded — but it was proposed.
AARO’s reporting trends page covers January 1996 to January 2026. Of closed cases: 52.1% were balloons, 32.1% satellites, 7.8% UAS. Morphology data shows 39.7% orb/sphere shapes and 32.3% lights. Most sightings occur at 20,000–25,000 feet. And 15 closed cases were identified as jetpacks.
